An Area Rich in Natural Attractions!

Less than two hours by car from San José, our Bed and Breakfast is a place to enjoy the wonderful natural beauty of this area. Here are some of the most attractive places to visit nearby.

La Selva Biological Station (5 minutes from the lodge) is a facility known worldwide for scientific research and conservation. The Station offers everything from rainforest walks to a graduate education program.

Spotting birds on the RiverThe Sarapiquí River: In the upper part of the river there is fast water for rafting and kayaking, as well as ideal conditions for nature walks and bird-watching. Down river it gets deeper, so there are boats for lazy trips down the river while watching wildlife such as crocodiles, green caimans, iguanas, monkeys, sloths and birds.

Bird watching is a most highly recommended reason to visit us and we do know the area very well. In the Caribbean lowlands, you can find over half of all the species of birds in Costa Rica, which in turn has more birds than all of the United States and Canada put together! We will help you find as many of the 460 species of birds in our area as we can. Some, you will only see here. We may even see the rarest birds like the Great Green Macaw. (Articles: Costa Rica birder report and Finding Birds in Costa Rica.)

Other activities that you can enjoy.

La Paz (Peace) Waterfall on the Old Road
  • Guided nature walks, canopy tours: enjoy and identify the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest with special emphasis on endangered species. Animals we see include the Tamandua (tree-dwelling anteater), Spider Monkey, White-faced Monkey, Howler Monkey, Two-toed Sloth, crocodile, Green Iguana, peccary, Coatimundi. Younger travelers love the basilisk lizard that walks on water, highways of leaf-cutting ants, and the brightly colored tree frogs and land crabs.
  • Horseback riding: guided expeditions through areas of great natural beauty, especially to observe all those birds!
  • Rafting & Kayaking: the Sarapiquí River provides ideal conditions for a great adventure in rafting and kayaking up to Class 3. Professional instructors and first-class equipment guarantee your security. (Article: Paddling Costa Rica: Río Sarapiquí.)
  • Mountain biking: The region is full of roads and footpaths where you can practice and enjoy this activity, whether beginner or expert. Highly recommended!

At Posada Andrea Cristina, your host, Alex Martinez, is also a naturalist and accomplished tour guide. We can offer information on the cultural activities, medicinal plants, and economic activities, such as banana plantations, in the area.

We are also within easy reach of the capital, San José, as well as other well-known attractions such as:

Read about our new referral. A family of our acquaintance have a new guest cabin near La Colonia Virgen del Socorro, a few miles from here. The cabin is on a farm in the middle of the woods and is a beautiful place to stay for a few days to observe nature, especially the wonderful birds. Please contact us to make arrangements.
